The right clothing for a balloon flight is an important part of this adventure, as it can help you stay comfortable and safe as you float through the air. Here are some tips on how to dress for a balloon flight to ensure the best experience.

Extra coverage

One of the most important things to keep in mind when dressing for a balloon flight is extra coverage. Especially in summer, the temperature can change significantly throughout the trip. The balloon flight itself usually lasts about 1 h, but for the entire attraction you should prepare yourself for up to 4 h. For evening flights, we often return home already after sunset, so it’s a good idea to carry a sweatshirt, fleece or light jacket.

Is it cold higher up?

The temperature drop with altitude, depending on conditions, can be about 0.6 °C/100 m. It would seem that by ascending 1 km, we should significantly feel the difference in temperature. However, it should be remembered that the balloon’s propulsion system and its heart is a propane-powered burner. It heats the air in the shell sometimes up to 100°C. The burner is mounted quite high, so only some of the heat radiates into the basket, but it’s worth getting a baseball cap. For passengers of taller height, this is more than advisable.

Comfortable shoes are a must

While the launch site can be chosen, the landing of the balloon takes place in an adventurous place. You should be prepared to walk on uneven ground, so it is important to wear shoes that are comfortable and stable. Shoes with covered toes and a firm sole are recommended, as they will protect your feet from any sharp objects you may encounter on the ground. Avoid wearing sandals, flip-flops or other open-toed shoes. Dew is very common during morning flights, so it’s best that footwear be waterproof.

Balloons are not a fashion revue

Everyone would like to look good in photos taken during a balloon flight, especially if we want to show off to our friends. The problem begins when the balloon lands in taller grass, where nettles can be encountered. We strongly discourage wearing dresses and short shorts in favor of comfortable sportswear. The most important thing is to feel comfortable, even if we have to get a little dirty or walk over uneven ground.

Balloon festivals, competitions, and events in Poland in 2026

The year 2026 brings unique balloon festivals and competitions to Poland. Colorful balloons will decorate Polish cities and landscapes from April to October. The Aeroklub Polski has prepared a calendar full of events, from regional competitions to world championships. Pilots compete in the AX category, performing precision flights to designated targets.

How does a pilot control a balloon during a passenger flight?

A hot air balloon flight offers an extraordinary aerial experience. The pilot steers the balloon using heat and wind rather than an engine. Specialized knowledge of meteorology and physics is crucial. Changing altitude allows for the selection of the flight direction. A gas burner is the primary tool for ascent.

What happens when a balloon loses heat while flying over a city?

Hot air balloon pilots face significant heat loss challenges over urban areas. Continuous cooling mechanisms affect flight altitude unpredictably. Pilots must monitor and respond to temperature changes inside the envelope. Understanding heat exchange laws is vital for safe landings. Limited emergency sites demand precise altitude control. Passenger safety relies on pilot expertise and regulations.
